IRS Launches Tax Rebate Information Center

Sunday February 24, 2008
Hoping to answer a seemingly endless number of questions about the 2008 Tax Rebates, the Internal Revenue Service has launched a helpful Economic Stimulus Payments Information Center, offering check amount scenarios, along with information especially for Social Security recipients and veterans.

Example rebate check amount scenarios are provided for the following tax situations:

In addition, the IRS provides helpful examples (.pdf) of how 1040A tax return forms might be filled out by Social Security recipients and U.S. Veterans who are not normally required to file a tax return, but need to this year in order to get the rebate payment.

Finally, the IRS has posted an exhaustive Rebate Question and Answer page covering the most commonly asked questions regarding the payments.

Wondering if the rebates are an advance on next year’s return?

March 9, 2008 at 1:42 am
(2) Felicia says:

Will *EVERYONE* who filed for 2007 be getting a check for sure or is there a pick and choose scenario? I dont want to be looking for something that isn’t there. What about if you filed, and you have your grandparents on your return, do you get a rebate for them aswell?

March 9, 2008 at 7:13 am
(3) Robert says:

Danny: Yes, as is stated many times in my articles and on the IRS web sites.

Felecia: No, people who filed a return AND is qualified for a rebate will get one. “To receive a payment, taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, $3,000 of income and file a 2007 federal tax return. IRS will take care of the rest. Eligible people will receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples), and parents will receive an additional $300 for each eligible child younger than 17.” — The IRS, and as stated many times in my articles and on the IRS web site.

So, no grandparents. Also, if you owe any back taxes, that amount will be deducted from the rebate. If you owe more than the amount of the rebate, no rebate.

(4) crystal says:

based on your answer to danny what if they pay us more than we should get next year will we end up having to pay back part to the government? so next year we may not even get a tax return how does that help the economy for next year?

March 11, 2008 at 7:59 pm
(5) Robert says:

Crystal — Quoting the IRS… (Mainly see the second question.)

Q. Is my stimulus payment taxable?

A. No. You will not owe tax on your payment when you file your 2008 federal income tax return. But you should keep a copy of the IRS letter you receive later this year listing the amount of your payment. In the event you do not qualify for the full amount this year but you do next year, you will need to have the letter as a record of the amount you previously received.

Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008?

A. No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.

March 21, 2008 at 10:45 am
(11) Robert says:

Joan — Yes SSDI qualifies. He needs to fill out 1040-A. And like the post you commented on says…

“In addition, the IRS provides helpful examples (.pdf) of how 1040A tax return forms might be filled out by Social Security recipients and U.S. Veterans who are not normally required to file a tax return, but need to this year in order to get the rebate payment.”

April 2, 2008 at 1:07 pm

If the IRS is aware that the child support is delinquent, the amount owed will be deducted from the rebate. If that is more than the rebate — no rebate.

I have a deferred student loan. Will I still get a rebate?

May 10, 2008 at 9:34 pm
(27) crowwwwwww. says:

I have three kids under 6 years old, is the rebate only up to two kids or do I get an extra credit for the third child. I grossed 85000 last year. Do I get 1200 for the wife and I and 900 for the three kids for a total of 2100, or is 1800 the top amount?thanks so much to anyone that can help. I did my taxes electronically and thought the check would be here by now. I little bit confused on the process. Thanks ahead of time for any answers out there…

May 14, 2008 at 6:05 pm
(28) Linda says:

According to the direct deposit schedule, I should have received my rebate on May 9th, I didn’t. WHen I check the site for status (Where’s my Stimulus Payment) It tells me “We are sorry. Specific information about your Stimulus Payment is not available.”
What does that mean and how can I be sure I’m still getting it?
I’m sure I qualify and I do not oe Federal Taxes, but I do owe state $60.00, could that be the reason for the delay?

May 16, 2008 at 11:10 pm
(29) Heather Woolls says:

It’s nice to see that other people who are eligible for the stimulus payment haven’t received theirs either. I was supposed to receive mine via direct deposit on May 2nd, yet it is the 16th and I still do not have it (nor by mail either). Every time I try to check the website, it is down. And yes, I could sit on the phone for an hour or so, waiting with the hope that I might talk to someone who will only tell me that the system isn’t properly working or something went wrong somewhere down the line. It’s nice to know that what is supposed to be a stimulus payment is causing a lot of stress…goes along with the rest of the goverment.

May 22, 2008 at 12:35 pm
(33) norman says:

wondering what happens if after you receive a rebate check for say, 100 dollars and then you file an amended federal tax form that would entitle you to the entire amount ($600-100), what will the IRS do? Will they automatically send you the difference in the rebate or do you have to contact them.

May 22, 2008 at 1:40 pm
(34) Robert says:

33 - Since the only way you could increase your rebate would be to reduce your reported income (AGI), I suspect the IRS will contact you, rebate or not.

Receiving Social Security quailifies you for a rebate. Why dosen’t receiving CA Public Employee’s Retirement Income qualify? It’s just as earned as Social Security.

Don’t tell me to go online because this tells me no info. availble. I feel like my tax money to pay your salary is waisted. (47) Michelle R says:

Excuse me Robert is it? Well Robert you didn’t seem to answer the question put to you by some people who asked if I owe a Goverment Student loan does the IRS take your Rebate check. So….
..And please don’t bother to answer if all your going to give is the IRS 1800 #. It’s so just not helpful. O.k? Thanks M.R

June 18, 2008 at 11:40 am
(48) Robert says:

Michelle — If the student loan is a government-backed loan AND you are behind on payments AND the IRS realizes it, the yes, the amount owed will be deducted from the rebate. You should get a letter from the IRS that summarizes your rebate and explaining any such deductions. BUT — I am not the IRS and this function of this area is really for comments, not questions.

June 18, 2008 at 11:42 am
(49) Robert says:

Also, Michelle — If you call the IRS at 7:00 am your time, you have a much better chance of getting them. Several people have reported success in doing so.

July 2, 2008 at 6:54 am

Sheila: You may owe taxes from a previous year. H&R Block would not necessarily know that. You need to work through the IRS. Try contacting a field office near you.

My son-in-law is in the Air Force and my daugher does not work. They have one child which is 3 years old. They got $900 rebate check. Should they not have gotten $1,500. Is the reason they only got $900 is that she does not work?
